  2. The Gene Stancil Skate For Cancer Benefit Contest

March 13, 2010 by Micah Stancil

Ever since my grandfather passed away with cancer I’ve wanted to do a benefit contest in his name.  On April 24, 2010 (rain date May 8th) The Coalition for Active Youth, and myself,  is partnering with Spartanburg Regional Foundation to put on a Skateboard  Benefit and Competition to help Children’s Security Blanket, a local non-profit organization which helps kids and their families with cancer. The Gene Stancil Skate For Cancer Benefit will be an all day event at the new Hot Spot Skate Park in Spartanburg, SC.  Skateboard contests, food, raffles , live music, and cash prizes will be offered to attract top skaters from the region.  Our major sponsor is Spartanburg Regional Foundation and Spartanburg Regional Hospital.  We are looking for more sponsors so if anyone would like to help sponsor the event or make a donation, you may email me at Celticsk8boards@aol.com for more information.  I’m working on the flyer now and will post it sometime this week with full details on the contest and prize money, but for now here’s a little information on the kids we’re helping.  Thanks to everyone in advance who plans on coming out and making this event successful.

These are just two of many children we have an opportunity to help through Children’s Security Blanket:

Tron Foster -  age 7 – bone cancer–lost half a femur and knee joint.   He is really outgoing and anyone who meets this young Super Hero will feel good.  He is in the first grade at Boiling Springs elementary.

James Campbell -  age 9 – eye cancer James was diagnosed when he was four years old.  He loves to play baseball and made all star last year with one eye.  He lives in Lyman, SC.
